Shibuya Startup Support (SSS) participated in Taiwan's largest startup event, Meet Taipei, held in Taipei from November 30th to December 2nd, 2023. The day before the event we visited the startup community and support organizations in Taipei, as well as joining Startup Island TAIWAN in co-hosting Japan Meets Taipei, an event for Taiwanese startups interested in expanding into Japan.

Japan Meets Taipei
Japan Meets Taipei took place at Taiwan Tech Arena, the hub for tech startups, attracting participants including startups, investors, and ecosystem builders. At this event, Ariel Wang from Startup Island TAIWAN introduced the organization, while Sayaka Nakashima from SSS discussed our initiatives and Tsutomu Nakaya from Tokyo Shibuya City Office introduced DIG SHIBUYA, an art and technology event. Takeoff Tokyo, a startup pitch conference that will be held in Tokyo on April 10-11th 2024, also showcased their event, which aims to bring together startups from Japan and the rest of the world.
The latter part of the event featured a panel discussion on the startup ecosystems of Japan and Taiwan and strategies for Japan expansion, with Yoshiro Tasaka from SSS, Tina Cheng from Cherubic Ventures, and Maxwell Peng from VMFi providing real-time AI multilingual interpretation. The session also included open pitching sessions where local startups interested in expanding to Japan presented their ideas, followed by lively networking sessions between startups and investors.

Meet Taipei
Now in its 10th year, Meet Taipei featured a Global Booth Area where SSS exhibited. Participants from all over Asia, as well as startups from Europe, attended the event. Visitors to SSS’ booth included entrepreneurs, startups, and investors interested in expanding to Japan, creating a constant atmosphere of meaningful networking. Additionally, the Japan-Taiwan Forum had various startups pitching and networking on both the Japanese and Taiwanese side.
On the third day of the event, Mari Matsuzaki of SSS gave a talk on Shibuya’s Web3 community support.
Visit to startup communities in Taipei and Kaohsiung
SSS visited Huashan 1914 Creative Park and Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, the heart of the creative scene in Taipei, and Taipei Ark, a gathering place for web3 and creative startups.
SSS also hosted a casual networking event with creww Taiwan, which connects businesses in Japan and Taiwan and visited Startup Terrace Kaohsiung, an incubation space supporting 5G and IOT startups based in Kaohsiung City in southern Taiwan.
All-in-all it was an extremely busy but incredibly productive trip! SSS connected with a huge number oflocal startups, entrepreneurs, and ecosystem builders who are considering entering the Japanese market.
SSS will continue to strengthen collaborations with startups or the ecosystem in Taiwan. We will promote overseas collaboration efforts and support overseas startups to enter the Japanese market.
