Shibuya City has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nordic Innovation House (NIH) Tokyo to promote the technological and economic development of the startup industries in both regions.
Since launching Shibuya Startup Support in 2020, Shibuya City has assisted more than 70 startups with visa procedures and establishing companies in Japan. As part of its global collaboration efforts, Shibuya City has also organized events in partnership with other startup support organizations in cities worldwide. During the Helsinki-based startup conference Slush, Shibuya collaborated with NIH Tokyo to host the networking event ‘Japan Meets New Nordics,’ strengthening ties with Nordic countries.
NIH Tokyo, in collaboration with the commercial sections of the embassies of the five Nordic countries and their trade promotion organizations, supports the smooth entry of Nordic startups and growth companies into the Japanese market. NIH Tokyo also provides networking opportunities and programs for those both from Japan and the Nordic region, hosting pitch events, business meetings, and webinars to introduce the Nordic ecosystem and industry trends.
Purpose of the MoU
Shibuya City and NIH Tokyo have pledged to “foster technological and economic development and strengthen the startup ecosystem in both regions” through information exchange, startup support, and co-hosted events.
Under this strategic partnership, both parties will actively create opportunities to promote globalization and industrial development in their regions.

To commemorate the signing of this MoU, Shibuya City and NIH Tokyo will jointly host an event on September 25th 2024, in conjunction with the Tokyo Game Show. Around 20 creative and gaming startups from the Nordic region will participate.
